In this episode, we appreciated how real Lori was with us. She opened up about the challenges of maintaining an engaging social media presence, including the pressure to produce content and the psychological toll of equating follower counts with self-worth. Despite having a significant following, Lori discussed the plateau in her Instagram growth and the realization that numbers do not define her value or success.

We delved into the complexities of the social media algorithm, which often favors youth and beauty, making it difficult for more mature and experienced professionals to compete. Lori emphasized the importance of authenticity and focusing on providing valuable content rather than getting caught up in the numbers game.

Our co-host and Education Specialist, Tara Swagger, contributed to the conversation by highlighting the saturation of the beauty and wellness market on social media and the unrealistic standards it sets. She also pointed out the potential disconnect between a large following and actual business success, reminding listeners that a strong social media presence doesn’t always translate to real-world profitability.

NAA President Rachael Pontillo emphasized the value of being oneself on social media. She mentioned how some people may feel pressured to create highly curated and aesthetically pleasing content, but authenticity is what truly connects with followers. She shared her experience of not worrying about having the perfect setup or lighting in her posts and instead focusing on sharing genuine and relatable content–and that paid advertising for small business owners is often not worth the expense.

The episode concluded with discussing how important it is to remember that social media is just one aspect of a business. Lori’s candid sharing provided a refreshing perspective on navigating the ever-changing landscape of social media for skin wellness professionals.

We hope you find solace and encouragement in Lori’s story, as it underscores the universal struggle with social media’s demands and the importance of maintaining balance and authenticity in our digital lives.
