When it comes to natural deodorants, it’s not uncommon to get a unique piece of must-try advice or a new product recommendation from every person you ask. It seems we all have our own particular routines to ensure that we smell and feel fresh each day, and natural deodorant, at least for the moment, isn’t one size fits all. Here at the NAA, we each swear by different products, some handmade and some store-bought, which underscores our viewpoint that we are unique, ‘bioindividual’ beings that react differently to ingredients and product formulations. And even beyond bioindividuality, no two natural deodorant formulas use the same combination of active ingredients. It’s no wonder that the topic of natural deodorants and their performance is so polarizing!
If you’re currently frustrated with the natural deodorants you’ve tried, you may want to sample formulas that use different key ingredients. Check out our list of some of the most well-established natural deodorant key ingredients below. You’ll boost your natural ingredient knowledge, and gain a little perspective on why your best friend’s deodorant makes your underarms sting— or stink. Remember, person to person, not all natural deodorants are created equal.
Some NAA-approved natural deodorant key ingredients:
- Coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil is naturally antibacterial and antifungal with soothing emollient properties and a naturally pleasant fragrance.
- Aluminum-free baking soda. This classic natural deodorant active ingredient is naturally deodorizing, drying, and very effective.
- Arrowroot powder. This plant-based powder provides light drying action and a smooth feel. It’s excellent for sensitive skin types, as well as for those with gluten sensitivities or allergies.
- Tapioca starch. An absorptive powder and thickener that is also gluten-free and a well-performing alternative for those who seek a baking soda-free deodorant.
- Essential oils. Essential oils like tea tree, lavender, and rosemary are known for their naturally antibacterial and anti fungal properties, and they also lend natural fragrance to a product with far less risk of irritation and sensitization than synthetic fragrances.
- Activated charcoal. A highly absorbent natural ingredient.
- Saccharomyces ferment. Vegetable protein extract that contains enzymes to break down compounds that cause odors.
- Kaolin clay. A very fine, mild, white clay which has natural absorbing properties.
- Zinc ricinoleate. This salt derived from castor oil binds with odorous substances and neutralizes them.
